Diana Petruccelli Bio:

"I graduated from COM in '04 and majored in Public Relations. I started working at the American Cancer Society the day after graduation in a temporary position as a Recruiter for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer covering the Boston and Cambridge region. Later that Fall, after the walk had ended, I was hired internally in our Health Initiatives department working with Volunteers and Health Systems in the Metro Boston area. In 2005, I returned to Boston Strides working as a Strategic Planner with our data and online systems. Last year, I briefly worked as Director of Corporate Relations in the Greater Boston area and the state of Maine. This past April, I returned to Boston Strides yet again as Walk Manager.

When I first decided to major in Public Relations, I planned on having more of a political focus. I was born and raised in East Boston, MA and come from a very political community and family. However, during the Fall semester of my Senior Year, I enrolled in Non-Profit PR. Our final project was to write up a plan for an American Cancer Society Relay for Life event in our hometown. After researching ACS for this project, I was hooked! I loved everything the organization stood for and I still do.

The CW Public Relations Campaign Contest

The objective—to build awareness among college students for two of television’s hottest new shows — 90210 and Melrose Place — airing Tuesday nights on The CW.

The time commitment and timeline—from Sept. 1st – Oct. 9, the team(s) will meet at least twice a week. From Oct. 15 – Oct. 26, once a week. Teams will be composed of four or five teammates.

Campaign Rules & Guidelines
The CW Campaign invites students to execute a public relations campaign on and around campus for two of television's hottest new shows — "90210" and "Melrose Place" — airing Tuesday nights on The CW. Students will research and plan their campaigns in August and September, implement from Sept. 11–Oct. 9, and submit their entries to PRSSA by Oct. 26.

The best campaigns will be honored at the PRSSA Awards Ceremony during the 2009 National Conference in San Diego by an actor from one of The CW's hit series. The team with the best campaign will be awarded a private meet-and-greet with the actor and the opportunity to plan the actor's media tour while in San Diego.

Here's a great fall internship opportunity at Schneider Associates! If you are interested in public relations and marketing and want to "learn by doing," Schneider Associates is a great place to grow your skills, gain valuable agency experience, build your portfolio and have fun.

Frugal Yankee Fall Internship Position

Bring your resume or submit it in advance for review and schedule 1:1 meetings with "Resume Review" gurus, seasoned representatives from top companies in the region, who will provide constructive guidance on how to package a winning resume.

The Publicity Club of New England awards the annual William M. Cavanaugh student grant of $1,000 each spring as part of our mission to foster a community of public relations professionals. The grant application is open to juniors or seniors studying in an accredited journalism, public relations or communications program at a New England college. A recommendation by an internship/work supervisor or faculty member who has extensive knowledge of the student's abilities, work ethic and anticipated career path must accompany the application.

Spring Break in New York City

New York, New York here we come. Why waste spring break in the Caribbean or Florida when you can join Professor Quigley and a bevy of your classmates on the annual COM tour of New York City PR firms and departments? From Monday March 9- Wednesday March 11 a select group of COM public relations students will have the opportunity to meet our alums working at the world’s best firms and departments.

This year we plan to visit a mix of some of the largest PR firms, a mid size firm, a boutique and two in-house departments. Confirmed stops include Ketchum, Burson-Marsteller, MTV Networks, Showtime, Marina Maher Communication and Cohn & Wolfe. More to come! Presenters at the firms range from AAE’s to senior VP’s (last year Ray Kotcher, CEO of Ketchum spoke to our students.). HR representatives will also be at the present.

PRAdvanced Conference

Hi Everyone!

Our PRAdvanced Conference is only 24 days away! Things are coming along great and we hope you will all be able to come!

On that note, PLEASE remember that the cutoff date for the $20.00 reduced registration price is Friday, February 20! If you register later than that, the price jumps to $35.00!

That being said, Jacki Archard will be available at this Thursday's meeting (2/5, 5pm in COM101) and next Thursday's meeting (2/12) to collect money and help fill out registration forms. If you are interested in coming to the conference, please bring your $20 (cash or check made out to Boston University PRSSA) and Jacki will give you a registration form to fill out on the spot - that way, you don't have to worry about passing anything in later or your form/money getting lost in the shuffle.

Remember, our breakout sessions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis! So, the earlier you register for the conference, the more likely you are to get into the breakout session you want.

UNIVERSAL PICTURES CAMPUS U INTERNSHIP

Universal Pictures is in search of a College Representative from your school to join our Campus U team. Campus U is a grassroots-marketing program comprised of student representatives at top campuses across the country dedicated to promoting and publicizing select Universal Pictures’ feature film and home entertainment releases.
The Campus U program for Spring 2009 will be in session from March – May and will continue again in September for the next academic year. Each representative will be in direct communication with the Universal Pictures Marketing Team in LA via an extranet site, email, phone and fax.

The main goal of Campus U is to increase awareness for Universal Pictures' releases by creating and executing unique marketing campaigns.

A brief and general description of what will be required for each campaign:
• Create a marketing campaign for your campus - focusing on promotions and publicity
• Work with on-campus media to secure a film feature or review
• Work with on-campus media to secure promotional support
• Coordinate advance screenings for students
• Work closely with on-campus student and faculty groups
• Incorporate on-campus and nearby retailers
• Distribution of posters and promo items around campus
• Host themed activities and parties both on campus and in the surrounding area
• Carry out guerrilla marketing stunts to spread buzz
Representatives will be paid a monthly stipend while Campus U is in session. Reps will be responsible for weekly email updates and reports.
Requirements:
• Sophomore status as of Spring 2009 is preferred but juniors should still apply. Applicants with only 2 semesters left before graduating will not be considered.
• Advertising/Public Relations/Marketing/Communications students preferred
• A minimum of 10-15 hours per week to focus on Campus U
• Easy access to Internet, email, phone, fax and Fed Ex deliveries

No previous experience is necessary. All Representatives will work directly with Universal to gain an understanding of what is expected.

The Gerald Powers PR Scholarship

Powers Scholarship Overview

Each year, the Gerald Powers PR Scholarship Committee searches for BU's next rising star in the field of public relations.

First awarded in 2001, the scholarship is awarded annually to a BU senior in recognition of their achievements and their potential to contribute to the public relations community. The scholarship recipient receives a cash prize and joins the ranks of outstanding students and professionals influenced and helped by COM Professor Emeritus Gerald Powers over the decades.

Scholarship applicants must be graduating BU seniors pursing a career in public relations.

Each applicant must submit a scholarship application. The applications are meant to highlight a candidate's achievements and include a choice of essays to demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to public relations.

Applications also require the contact information of a professional reference that the committee may contact to learn more about the applicant.

Criteria considered by the selection committee in the review of applications will include:

- Clear intent to pursue a career in public relations
- Academic achievement
- Proven communication skills
- Internships or other relevant experiential learning opportunities
- Reference that illustrates the professional potential of the applicant
- Extra-curricular activities relating to PR

- Completed applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on April 10, 2009
- Candidates selected for interview will be notified on April 20, 2009
- Interviews will held on April 24, 2009
- The scholarship winner will be notified by May 1, 2009

Since the scholarship is for Seniors and there are a lot of things competing for their attention as the semester goes on, we try to make this available as early as possible.

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to bring attention once more to an awesome opportunity our members have, especially if you'd like more experience in event planning. It's also an impressive thing to put on your resume, and a great chance to network with professionals. It's our third annual Conference, PR Advanced: Innovation Through Leadership on February 28 from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. We need YOUR help planning the Conference, and spreading the word about it!

Last year, we had speakers from 360 Public Relations, Weber Shandwick, Fleishman-Hillard, Marketwire, Marina Maher Communications, and our keynote speakers were David Meerman Scott, author of the best-selling The New Rules of Marketing & PR, and Rick Murray, president of Edelman Digital. More than 14 exhibitors represented their companies and organizations at the Conference's career fair.

After several long months of unsuccessfully posting his résumé and applying to jobs online, Alex Ballin, 24, decided to take his job search into his own hands.
The 2008 graduate from Radford University planted himself at a busy intersection in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, sporting a white sign that read, "Talented B.A. Needs Career" along with his business suit.
He wanted to get employers' attention and it wasn't happening from simply submitting applications online. One employer thought Ballin's efforts showed drive and ambition and tossed a business card out of his car to Ballin. He got an interview a week later.
While Ballin's tactic was a more extreme -- and literal -- way to grab an employer's attention, with such uncertainty surrounding the economy, these intense and creative approaches are a must for today's job seeker.
"In today's competitive job market, freelancers and applicants need as much leverage as they can muster to land their next gig," says Cindy Caldwell, a creative recruiter with Randstad Creative, a specialty division of Randstad Work Solutions.
"The résumé needs to stand out above all the rest, without being unprofessional. The samples need to be presented in such a way that is easily accessible to the employer -- waiting around for a slow Web page to load or using a MySpace page as the portfolio site is not going to make the cut." iReport.com: How are you making yourself attractive to employers?
When Linda Jay Geldens, a freelance copyeditor, went to a computer conference and received the internal newsletter for Apple, she saw that it was "riddled with errors."

"I wanted to be the freelance copyeditor of the Apple Computer internal newsletter," she says. "I circled all the mistakes in red pen, made an appointment with the newsletter's editor, walked into his office, threw the newsletter on his desk and said with a smile, 'You need me!' He hired me instantly."
Do you want to be hired instantly, too? Here are some standard and creative tactics that will say, "Hire me!" to employers during your next job search.
Throughout the job search
• Apply at companies that aren't seeking candidates. "Read the business pages to find out what businesses are growing," says Laura George, author of "Excuse Me, Your Job is Waiting."
"Send such companies a résumé and a letter explaining what you can bring to the organization. If they have a need and see talent, you may be saving them the time and trouble involved in a talent search."
• Pick up the phone. "What gets my attention is a phone call and real live voice. Most communication is done via e-mail and you don't get the total picture of a person without that verbal communication," says Barbara Zaccone, president of BZA LLC, a strategic design company. "A perfect example would be a follow-up phone call after the interview. No one ever does that. And I mean no one."
On your résumé
• It's never one-size-fits-all. "Don't try to sell what you are selling; sell what the employer is buying. Make sure your résumé fits the position and the organization where you are seeking employment," George says. "Hiring managers look at skill set, education, experience and where you got that experience. They want to make sure you are going to be able to do the job and fit into the corporate culture."
• Make it easy on the eyes. "Envision a hiring manager looking at a résumé like a driver going by a billboard. Try to make it absorbable at high speeds," says Gwen Martin, managing partner of NumberWorks, a Minneapolis, Minnesota-based staffing firm. "Use bullet points and leave white space so it's easy on the eyes to read. Give the bird's eye view -- you can give the story behind the résumé in the interview."
Wendy Enelow, author, trainer and career consultant, strongly suggests using a typestyle other than Times New Roman. Stay conservative and use fonts like Georgia, Tahoma, Bookman or Verdana.
• Include success stories. Write down several career achievements of which you are most proud, suggests Joanne Meehl, author of "The Résumé Queen's Job Search Thesaurus and Career Guide."
"Choose one or two of these career success stories to go on the résumé, in very brief form, near the top of page one," she says. "These examples of what the candidate has done and can do, grab the employer's attention."
• Analyze keywords. Analyze several job postings in the field for which you are looking for a job, says Cheryl Palmer, certified executive career coach and résumé writer. "Develop a list of keywords from those postings that you incorporate into the résumé under a subheading entitled 'core competencies.'
Employers search their database of résumés by keyword, so having these terms on your résumé increases your chances of your résumé being selected for further review."
In the cover letter
• Lose the "To Whom It May Concern." That went the way of the 20th century, says Lynda McDaniel, a business writing coach. "Try to get the person's name. If not, simply say 'Greetings' or 'Hello.'"
• Forget the "This letter is in regards to your ad..." "People reading these letters are already bored with the reams of pabulum they have to read. Do you really want to make them comatose?" McDaniel asks.
• Show, don't tell. "Share a good story about what you've accomplished. Stories show why you're the best candidate. They also show you've got a head on your shoulders," McDaniel says.
During the interview
• Identify why you are a good fit. "Often people peruse a job for no other reason than it is available," says Danielle Weinstock, author of "Can This Elephant Curtsy on Cue? Life Lessons Learned On A Film Set For Women In Business." "Until you can determine why you and the company are a good match, you can't sell yourself."
• Keep your responses job-related. Many job seekers start off the interview on the wrong note when they respond to the statement, "Tell me about yourself," Palmer says. "Job seekers give a personal response instead of a professional response.
Your response will say, 'Hire me,' if you tailor your responses to the position you are applying for. Review that job announcement the night before the interview and write out some bullet points for yourself to speak to the employer's needs."

Critics argue that CSR distracts from the fundamental economic role of businesses; others argue that it is nothing more than superficial window-dressing; still others contend it is an attempt to preempt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful multinational corporations. The Publicity Club of England is very proud to welcome special guest Professor Gustavo A Yepes López of Bogota, Colombia to discuss his study of 1,008 Latin American organizations and their social responsibility practices. He will bring a global view of CSR at work, while our commentators offer advice on bringing Prof. Lopez’s findings home to the United States. Spring 2009 Practice Communications Internship

Overview: This position will assist the practice communications manager and other members of the communications department in supporting communications activities for specific practice areas within the Institute, including the Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine, Hematologic Oncology, and other organizational priority areas. The intern will learn about day-to-day tasks through specific projects and works assignments that will help to increase program awareness and grow clinical patient volume.

The Z Square agency team pulled of an AMAZING grand opening! Great turnout, delicious food and awesome performances. Take a look...

This is Allison M. Francis, a sophomore at BU and an amazing singer/guitar/harmonica player. She started off the evening with some original tunes and played some sets in between poetry performances.

The young lady in the stripes is Jessica Kontchou, a slam poetry performer. Jessica was the first to perform and mixed it up with love and empowering pieces.

The young lady in the blue sweater is Gabriella Williams (below), also a slam poetry performer. She even wove in some singing into one of her pieces.

Unfortunately we don’t have a picture of Gabe Sherman, but it was his first reading and he did an awesome job as well!

Lastly, the gentalman pictured below is Andrew Jerrel Jones, the WINNER of the $50 Z Square gift card. It was a close CLOSE vote (the Z team needed 2 tie-breakers to determine the winner) so congratulations to all!

According to Melanie, Z account AD, the team plans to organize another event after Thanksgiving break.

Emilie and I walked in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk earlier this month with Champions (the low-commitment community service group on campus). The photos here are from the finish line @ the Hatch Shell.

Seeing so many women with the survivor sashes or the "I'm walking for my mother" signs were really heartwarming. I recommend any BU student (even you, boys!) to walk next year, especially because it is on our campus. The 5k loop begins at the Shell, goes down Comm. Ave, past Marsh Chapel, continues along Memorial Dr. all the way to the Museum of science and ends at the Shell. The Walk is a day-long event, so you don't have to begin at the official start time (8AM).

General Motors Communications Internship Program

DEADLINE: Friday, Oct. 17, 2008

Each internship may have a varying start date requirement but generally will run from approximately May through August for a period of 12 weeks.

Moving allowance and housing are provided.

GM is seeking interns for each of the following areas:

Grassroots Communications, Detroit, MI
Manufacturing Communications, Detroit and Orion, MI
Premium Channel Communications, Detroit, MI
Advanced Propulsion and Environmental Communications, Pontiac, MI

Applicants should have completed their sophomore year and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Undergraduate and graduate students will be considered. Candidates should still be classified as active students during the internship and should have the right to work in the U.S.

Cover letter and resumes may be sent to Lesley Hettinger at lesley.hettinger@gm.com. Please include GPA and anticipated graduation date. If your background uniquely qualifies you for a specific internship please explain in the cover letter. Deadline for submission is Friday, Oct. 17, 2008.

YouTube Competition!

The Panhellenic Council here at Boston University is the governing body over all of the sororities recognized on campus. They recently received a grant from a private donor who has privileged the Greek community with the opportunity to implement a project to involve our campus in the election. Since last summer’s presidential debates, the internet, especially YouTube, has played a significant role with the involvement of younger generations in the 2008 presidential election; even leading to an entire presidential debate fielded with questions from YouTube videos.

The Panhellenic Council has therefore decided to organize a YouTube competition on campus to encourage BU students to become involved in the election through means that are relevant to today’s technologically savvy students. Beginning today and lasting through Tuesday, October 14th, students are invited to make 30 to 45 second videos addressing one or more of the following topics:

o Why it is important to vote
o How to register to vote
o How to receive an absentee ballot

Videos must be sent to GoVoteNow@gmail.com no later than October 14th. A panel will review the videos to ensure appropriate content and that they do not favor a specific political agenda. The videos will then be posted on the GoVoteNow channel on YouTube by October 15th.

The video that receives the most views, or hits, between October 15th and Election Day on November 4th will be awarded a cash prize of $1,000 on behalf of the Greek Community at Boston University.

Best is vague. What I mean here is inspiring and engaging. It's not everyday "The Mother of Cause Marketing" generously passes her wisdom's on to a crowd of communications students. The take home message was: demand more from companies you buy from by asking "What do you stand for?" Technically speaking, her presentation was flawless from the video clips to the attractive slides to the interesting insights. My oral presentation professor would have cried. Worthwhile periodicals Carol mentioned: Good Magazine (goodinc.com/about) and The Holmes Report (holmesreport.com). Gray & Rice Public Relations, a B2B PR agency is looking for a fall intern to work directly with seasoned account managers and their account teams.

The projects will vary, but I can assure you it will be more than just a "typical internship". The Company wants their intern to walk away with a number of pieces for his or her portfolio, including press releases and press clippings. The internship will assist with building media relations skills, and the intern will have his or her own client to work on.

While the internship is unpaid, it's a great way to build a portfolio
and experience for a résumé. The office is located in Government Center and is easily accessible by T.
